Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a digital record of a unique product’s complete life cycle, storing key traceability data about the product. According to Edson Perin, founder and editor of IoP Journal, this data aims to support Circular Economy, decarbonization, and sustainability.

“The European Commission has proposed to establish DPP in the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, which is expected to be adopted by 2026. Three priority areas are in the initial focus: electric & electronics, battery, and textile sectors”, said Perin, who is going to speak about this subject at RFID Journal LIVE! 2023, in Orlando, FL, next week.

“To follow the EU DPP, companies will need to provide accurate and reliable information about their products across the entire value chain, including data on raw material extraction, production, recycling, etc”, said Perin. “They will also need to use an open DPP data exchange protocol adapted to the needs of Circular Economy stakeholders and based on up-to-date digital technologies, like radio frequency identification (RFID), QR Codes and GS1 standards”.

At his presentation called “Digital Product Passport Reinforces the Power of Smart Packaging”, Perin will show how companies can follow the European Union DPP, using RFID, QR Codes and GS1 standards. “The world of smart packaging was transformed in 2022 when the European Union established a timeline for adapting products to the new Digital Product Passport (DPP) rules”.

The EU also issued deadline for reaching the mandatory status of the Circular Economy through production lines of products to be sold in Europe. In his session, Perin will present that DPP concept reinforces smart packaging as a set of tools that integrate global technological solutions for tracking, authenticity, sustainability, and customer experience.

The world’s most important Internet of Things (IoT) conference and exposition RFID Journal LIVE! 2023 will discuss opportunities and challenges with the Digital Product Passport (DPP), created by the European Union to achieve Circular Economy goals till 2050. The event will be held on May 9-11, in Orlando, Florida, at the Orlando Orange County Convention Center.

The session “Digital Product Passport Reinforces the Power of Smart Packaging”, by IoP Journal editor Edson Perin, will be on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at room W314A, from 10:25 AM till 11:10 AM.
