Identification and tracking are on the rise in the world of Smart Packaging, says Andrew Manly, director of Active and Intelligent Packaging Industry Association (AIPIA) – from wich IoP Journal is media partner, since 2020 – who spoke exclusively to the IoP Journal about expectations for 2021. Manly also says that blockchain is among the hot topics. All of these aspects must be considered by companies, especially due to compliance and legislation issues.

“This should represent an evolution in the supply chains, in 2021”, explains Manly, based on what happened in 2020, despite and due to the pandemic. For the AIPIA executive, the issues of counterfeiting in the pharmaceutical industry will become critical and will demand even more packaging that guarantees the authenticity and origin of the products, especially in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Supply chain problems, according to Manly, will be the big drivers of Smart Packaging technologies, as has been the case in recent years. “It doesn’t look like I’m saying something new, it’s more of the same, but the supply chain problems are even more critical right now. Especially, because companies today are increasingly ‘global players’ ”.

Another highlight of the current year is sustainability, which was already developing as an important topic even before the pandemic, but which now – in the midst of the health crisis – is gaining new momentum.
